I believe that fashion is art, and fashion designers are artists. it's one of the reasons that I love it so much. Seeing a runway show is like watching a bunch of art pieces come to life and walk around.
Which is why Project Runway is my favorite show. All of the workroom drama and backstage bickering is entertaining, but the best part is watching the final artwork on the runway.
Last week, the designers were challenged to use Hallmark cards to create a "look". Just paper greeting cards and a little muslin for form. If someone asked me to make a dress out of paper, it would look like this -
Seriously. This is why I studied the business side of fashion in college rather than the design side.
However, the artists at Project Runway came up with these lovely creations -
Out of GREETING CARDS. The wedding dress that Edmond created was so beautiful, and it flowed and moved like a real gown. He even made a bouquet with envelopes.
Speaking of Edmond, he's my favorite so far this season. He has tried out for the show for fourteen years, and finally got on. That's persistence! I can't wait to see what he can do with some actual fabric.
Do you think fashion is art? Do you watch Project Runway?
I don't watch this show but I think it would be something I'd really like. I totally agree, fashion is art.
ReplyDeleteUm, how can you NOT be watching this show? Get on that asap - you will love it!
DeleteI have never seen it but I find the concept so inspiring. It's an art form all on its own, and one that makes a huge impact too.
ReplyDeleteIt's a great show - very artistic and very entertaining!
DeletePerhaps I am easily impressed - I quite liked your first photo of the paper dress! The others are mind-bogglingly beautiful - and I love the envelope bouquet. Designers most certainly are artists!
ReplyDeleteHaha - maybe I can design a dress for you Susan!
DeleteI have never watched that show. When youtubers were on it, I was like eh no thanks.
ReplyDeleteGive it another try - it's so good!
DeleteI am not a faithful viewer but will watch from time to time!! It is amazing what these artists can create!!

Thank you for such a nice comment! How fun to have a fashion designer in the family!
DeleteI wish I would have caught this one, I used to work for Hallmark! They are beautiful dresses.Certainly art.
ReplyDeleteA couple of months ago I went to a show at the Fashion Institute, a retrospect of clothes from influential designers from around the world starting in the 1920's. It was fantastic art show!!
I would love to see that show!
DeleteI have never seen this show but perhaps I will take a look! :)

ReplyDeleteYep, no creativity in these bones. Oh well.
DeleteGosh, I have missed watching Project Runway. Need to figure out when it is on and get back to watching it. Incredible greeting card dresses. Even your prototype could be used for a first Thanksgiving Native American mini dress.
ReplyDeleteHaha - it's definitely a little grade school like. The show is on Lifetime on Thursday nights!
DeleteI can't believe that they made those out of Hall mark cards they were all gorgeous! I have to admit I've not ever paid much attention to fashion before, but I am learning to enjoy it more and more through your eyes.
