The Shelter Pet Project
My friend Elizabeth is one of the most beautiful people I've ever met - inside and out. She's kind, friendly and loyal to her human family and friends. But it's her love for animals, especially older dogs and cats, that is truly amazing.
She fosters unwanted senior dogs, giving them a loving place to live out their final months. She has been known to crawl into blackberry bushes to rescue a crying, abandoned cat. She goes to the local animal shelter every week, where she bathes senior dogs, evaluates them, and then works with local rescue groups to find them a forever home. Every year she puts on Scrub A Mutt to raise funds for her non profit, Save A Mutt.
Elizabeth has never met a dog or cat that she didn't love. And trust me, they all love her back. Her mission is to help as many homeless animals as she can, but I know she feels like it's never enough. She shared with me that some days she has to remind herself "I can't save them all."
There is something that we can do to help, in our own way.
Get true, unconditional, fierce, unforgettable love through shelter pet adoption.
Each year approximately 3-4 million pets are adopted from shelter and rescue groups, but 2.4 million healthy and treatable pets still need our help to find a home. This post is on behalf of The Shelter Pet Project, a collaborative effort between The Humane Society of the United States, Maddie's Fund, and the Ad Council.
The goal of The Shelter Pet Project is to make shelters and rescue groups the first place people turn when looking to get a new pet.
Actress Bellamy Young, who plays First Lady Mellie Grant on NBC's "Scandal", in partnership with The Shelter Pet Project, stars in a new online video featuring her adopted dog Bean and adopted cat Sadie.
Her video helps break down misconceptions surrounding shelter pets and spreads the word that pets in shelters are wonderful and loveable.
Visit The Shelter Project.org where you can "meet" shelter pets through an interactive experience, search for a dog or cat from a local shelter or rescue group, read adoption success stories, and learn valuable information about pet adoption.
My friend Elizabeth can't save them all. But we can help.

We adopted our cat and dog from a shelter and they are both great, loving pets!

Yay, so glad to hear that Jill!
DeleteWe continually adopt rescue dogs. We just adopted two last week. I totally relate with you to want to give these critters a loving home but it is SO difficult having to say good-bye each time. I often blog about these experiences and have found many people who agree that they make the best pets.
ReplyDeleteThey definitely make the best pets. I don't know how my friend does it - she always takes in the oldest, sickest dogs and then has to say goodbye.
DeleteOur cat is a rescue cat .... great story!
ReplyDeleteYay to rescue cats!
DeleteOur family just adopted a little, sweet corgi. She has become the love of our lives...
ReplyDeleteOur neighbors have a corgi named Ralphie and we love him! Great dogs...
DeleteAlthough we don't have one now we have been home to several over the years. We're giving serious thought to adopting again soon
ReplyDeleteYour mom might enjoy a dog - my mother in law loved seeing our lab!
DeleteI am thankful for the people that foster. I don't know that I could do it, because I wouldn't be able to say goodbye. We have 7 furry family members right now (3 dogs and 4 cats) and all but one is a rescue. I think rescues know that they have been given a second chance at life and they are immensely grateful. All of our animals are wonderful. I can't imagine our family without them.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you have so many rescue pets. I agree, they seem so grateful to have found a new family!
DeleteHow wonderful! I love our two dogs and we volunteer at the shelter here a lot. There are so many pets who need a home. Thank you! Susan
ReplyDeleteI love your dog and enjoy seeing him on Instagram. Hope he's feeling better!
DeleteWe have three rescue pets and I can't imagine going any other way.
ReplyDeleteCool video! I've never watched Scandal, but she's adorable.
Ooh, you should watch Scandal. So good!
DeleteHello Lana! Your friend Elizabeth is truly an amazing woman––a real life superhero. I have a 'rescue' dog and he is so loving, loyal, and affectionate. I love my Cocoa very much. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteSo happy to hear that you have a rescue dog! They really are the most loving animals. Thanks so much for stopping by and reading!
DeleteThis was a great post - happy to say our dog was a pound puppy <3
