September is my favorite month. The mornings feel a little crisper, the leaves start to turn colors, and football season starts. More specifically....college football. I know the Seahawks expect me to be a 12th Man, but my heart belongs to Washington State University football.
My hubby and I both graduated from WSU, which is located in Eastern Washington, about five hours from here. It takes a special kind of patience to be a WSU Cougar fan. With the exception of a few seasons here and there (hello, Rose Bowl 1998), our football team loses...a lot. There's even a designated term, called "Coug-ing it" - whereupon a game that is about to be won is lost in the final minutes, due to ridiculous errors and questionable calls. Sigh.
However, this matters not to the true WSU Cougar fan! We are strong, mighty, and full of pride for our school - and there are a lot of us in Western Washington. For many years the first game of the season has been played in Seattle, and we attend every year.
Both of our boys have been raised as loyal Cougar fans, which can be difficult in a town of University of Washington Huskies, our biggest rival. Also difficult because, as mentioned before, we lose a lot. But I think this builds character :).
The Seattle game was played last Thursday at Century Link field, home of the Seahawks. Our opponent was Rutgers. We were supposed to win, and for a while we were....but then we "Coug'd it". Hmm. More character building. At least the weather was nice, as opposed to last year, when it rained so hard I thought we might drown before halftime.
It's only the first game of the season, so things might get better. The schedule doesn't look promising though...oh well. Once a Cougar, always a Cougar! Go WSU!
This is cute! I've learned from my boys that loyalty to a team is paramount. How fun that you can all cheer and enjoy the games together! Such a great family activity!
ReplyDeleteWe always have fun, even when they lose. My younger son and I enjoy it the most, but the other two come along for the ride!
DeleteI love that your family shares the fanaticism of the game!
ReplyDeleteIt's so fun going to games together!
DeleteLife is not all about winning :) I always love the underdog, so perhaps they would be the perfect team for me - if I ever decide to follow football!
ReplyDeleteOh, we're definitely the underdog most of the time!
DeleteWhat a fun day! You're right, it's not always about winning, it's enjoying something that you love with your family!

Having a hard time getting my younger son to realize that - but he's coming around!
DeleteMy husband is a season ticket holder for USC (University of Southern California) football. He is a big, big fan. I, unfortunately, am not. So great that you and your husband share this passion!
ReplyDeleteOooh...USC...one of our big Pac-12 rivals! My hubby actually likes it less than I do, but he goes along with me!
DeleteFootball season is fun at our house too. We're big Oklahoma University and Oklahoma State fans. That proves to be interesting around here since we live right over the border in Northeast Texas. lol

We can't even compete with you folks from the South. When I visit Texas and Oklahoma I can't believe how big your stadiums are!
DeleteI love football season! My husband and his high school buddies with whom he played football, still go to their high school games together. It is a friday night tradition for all of us, and our tailgating is the best. For college,we are SEC {Vanderbilt} fans in our home! It's nice to know other women share the passions of their husbands.
ReplyDeleteI've always enjoyed playing and watching sports. Love high school football games too!
DeleteI was never much of a fan of college football but this year with my football loving son at Purdue I'm going to have to root for them. Even though they're expected to finish last.
ReplyDeleteBut the truth is that there's so much more fun about college sports than just winning or losing. And based on my son's team, that's a very good thing.
Yep, I can relate. The college sports atmosphere is so fun, regardless of the outcome.
DeleteI can't do football, so I really don't root for anyone. If a game is on TV, I want the team that has the best colors to win.
ReplyDeleteOoh, root for us then! Our colors are very pretty!
DeleteI have a few die hard coug fans too, have season tickets to all the football, basketball, etc. I went once to visit them, and the school is gorgeous! Actually my one friend for his sons nursery, got WSU wallpaper border! It was so him to do that...haha.
ReplyDeleteI would have loved WSU wallpaper! The campus is really beautiful, but kind of in the middle of nowhere!
DeleteWhat a great time to spend with your whole family especially the boys! My son just started college at USC and he attended his first USC football game and he was super excited and had loads of fun. Of course it helped that they won :)

Ah...USC...one of our Pac-12 rivals. One of my favorite things about being in college was going to home football games!
DeleteI live in the SE so the only thing two things more important than college football is God and breathing. Even though I'm surrounded by Clemson, USC and Georgia bulldogs I am an Auburn fan myself! Cougars and Tigers at least we're in the same cat family!
ReplyDeleteYay for cat mascots! You guys have us beat when it comes to football fans!
Deleteha! Rutgers is my alma mater. I honestly only went to games when my sister was on the dance team for them! It was super fun.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to your team!
Aww..you beat us! How fun to watch your sister dance at games! Thanks for the good luck - we need it!
