"There are so many books left to read. For that reason alone, it is worth going on living. Books make me happy, they help me escape from reality".
- Felix J. Palma
Yesterday was the first Friday of the month, where I share a favorite author or book. However, since I was busy dodging fireworks and eating too much strawberry shortcake, this month we have Saturday sharing! If you're like me, you are always on the lookout for new books.
This month I'm recommending:
The Devil Wears Prada
by Lauren Weisberger
This is one of my favorite books, which could have something to do with the fact that I was a fashion major and I love Vogue magazine.
Many of you have probably seen the movie with Meryl Streep as the devil (AKA Anna Wintour). The movie adaptation was actually pretty good, but as usual, the book is so much better.
Lauren Weisberger is a former personal assistant to Anna Wintour, the famous editor-in-chief of Vogue. Anna has held this position for 26 years, and her nickname is Nuclear Wintour, due to her extremely frosty management style.
Although the book is a work of fiction, and Lauren herself has said it is not a one to one portrayal of Anna Wintour, she has admitted that her time at Vogue definitely "informed" the story, which I feel makes it much more entertaining.
In the book, a young, fresh out of college journalism major lands a job as a personal assistant to Miranda Priestly, editor-in-chief of Runway magazine. Andrea accepts the position on the promise that it will lead to a writing job at the magazine of her choosing. As time goes on, she realizes that her one in a million job may just steal a piece of her soul.
This book is interesting, witty, fast paced, and offers a very unique glimpse into the inner workings of a successful fashion industry magazine. Perfect summer reading!
Lauren has written several other books, and recently released a "sort of" sequel, Revenge Wears Prada. I have enjoyed her other works, but nothing can compare to her original story.
Have a wonderful weekend!

DeleteThe movie was so fantastic with the very talented cast! I would have a hard time reading the book and not see Meryl.
ReplyDeleteEven now when I think of the book I see Meryl - she was perfect for the part.
DeleteI love that book! I listened to the audiobook and the actors do such a great job with the characters. I have never seen the movie but I bet Meryl makes a great Miranda.
ReplyDeleteYou should definitely watch the movie - I'm sure you would enjoy it!
